  • Model "more volume": You run four times a week and sense that a fifth running day would be too much. Instead, you add a 60–90 minute cycling or swimming session. Weekly aerobic volume rises by 20–25% while impact load stays the same.
  • Model "injury prevention": You are prone to shin, Achilles or knee problems. One or two easy runs per week are permanently replaced by the elliptical or bike. This costs almost no run fitness but cuts the week's number of foot strikes by a third.

  • Sacrificing the specific sessions. Anyone who swaps the long run for a bike ride loses exactly the adaptation that matters in a marathon: muscular and structural fatigue resistance over long distances. Cross-training fills the gaps around the key sessions — never the other way round.
